Abstract

Neighborhood Services Inc. was founded in 1965 by a group of churches in the University District. NSI works to temper the effects of poverty by directly addressing hunger in Franklin County and by connecting those in need with critical re-sources to improve quality of life. We serve the community by passionately and respectfully serving our neighbors in need. This includes those from working, low income families, single individuals with young dependent children, and unemployed or disabled individuals and their families. The primary service area of NSI includes 4 zip codes, all in the near-campus area. Residents of these can visit the pantry once per month for a 7-day supply of food. Any other resident can visit once per month, and can attend our monthly produce markets, and utilize our clothing room.

Description

IMPACT. 1: In 2016 NSI served 48 zip codes across Franklin County. Approximately one third of those we served are children. We saw 9,867 total family visits to the pantry, and experienced an increase in all service categories over 2015. -- 2. Throughout 2016 NSI provided a 7-day supply of food to 2,393 unique families, who visited an average of 4.1 times. 519 families visited our clothing room, which is open to all residents of Franklin County. 482 students were supplied with backpacks of school supplies in August, and 1,251 families received holiday food baskets during the Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas holiday seasons.
