Abstract
The Women’s Association of the Columbus Symphony was instrumental in establishing a permanent orchestra in Columbus, Ohio. Oral histories and archival research reveals their ability to cultivate a viable civic ensemble. This narrative contributes to the understanding of women’s auxiliaries to orchestras as part of the solution for successful ensembles established in the twentieth century. By 1960, the Women’s Association of the Columbus Symphony was fully engaged not only as patrons to the Columbus Symphony, but also as managers of the most successful orchestra in the city. They exemplify the contributions women made to orchestras in America, specifically their efforts to establish, maintain, and develop a viable orchestra in Columbus.
