Abstract

We have reinvestigated the infrared spectra of Cl2 in benzene1, using carefully controlled experimental conditions. In addition we have also studied the Raman spectrum of Cl2 in benzene-carbon-tetrachloride mixtures to obtain frequency shifts and intensity changes. In general these studies verify the earlier results but lead to a more detailed understanding of the interaction betweeen Cl2 and benzene in these solutions, particularly to an understanding of recent studies2 criticizing the concept of charge transfer interactions.
