Abstract
The electronic polarizability components of the $NO_{3}^{-}$ ion are obtained from the optical refractive indices and the dipolar sums of an orthorhombic $KNO_{3}$ lattice. The relative contributions of site group splitting and factor group splitting are then calculated from experimental data for the Brillouin zone center modes arising primarily from the asymmetric stretching motion of the $NO^{-}_{3}$ ion.
