Abstract

Band contours have been measured directly under conditions of high resolution for the infrared active C-X stretching modes of $CF_{4}, CBr_{4}$, and $SiF_{4}$ in $CCl_{4}$ and $CS_{2}$ solutions. In all the above cases the bands were Lorentzian in form. The asymmetric contours of $CCl_{4}$ bands in $CS_{2}$ solutions and the pure liquid state can be quantitatively described by a sum of Lorentzians due to isotopic splittings with known relative populations of components and calculated and observed gas phase frequency differences. Lorentzian band contours have also been observed for several bands of cyclohexane in the pure liquid and solution phases. A new criterion has been developed for assessing the Lorentzian character of bands.
