Abstract
High resolution absorption and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra of crystals of $Cs_{2} ZrCI_{6}$ doped with $IrCI_{6}^{2-}$ have been recorded over the spectral region 15 500 to $39 000 cm^{-1}$ at liquid helium temperature. The absorption spectrum shows a great wealth of fine structure in general agreement with the results of $Douglas^{1}$ but with some additional detail due to higher resolution running conditions. The MCD spectrum is remarkably well resolved, in general showing a distinct feature corresponding to every absorption line. A preliminary analysis of these spectra will be given, and it will be shown that the Douglas interpretation is incorrect in a number of important respects.
