Abstract

High resolution absorption and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra of crystals of Cs2ZrCI6 doped with IrCI62− have been recorded over the spectral region 15 500 to 39000cm−1 at liquid helium temperature. The absorption spectrum shows a great wealth of fine structure in general agreement with the results of Douglas1 but with some additional detail due to higher resolution running conditions. The MCD spectrum is remarkably well resolved, in general showing a distinct feature corresponding to every absorption line. A preliminary analysis of these spectra will be given, and it will be shown that the Douglas interpretation is incorrect in a number of important respects.
