Abstract
The problem of the identification of aldehydes and ketones as the 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazones has been studied by many laboratories using x-ray diffraction, melting points, ultraviolet spectroscopy, and optical crystallography. Each of these methods possesses definite advantages and certain drawbacks. The present infrared study was undertaken to determine the value of infrared spectroscopy to this important method for identifying aldehydes and ketones. It was found that the spectra of the crystalline mulls of the 2,4-dinitrophenyl-hydrazones are unique and that the spectra provide very convenient means for characterizing aldehydes and ketones. The spectra of the derivatives in solution do not exhibit as many points of difference as the spectra of the crystalline mulls. While the effect of impurities on the melting point is pronounced, rather large amounts of impurities are required to effect changes in the spectra of the crystalline mulls. Fifty-seven problems of aldehyde and ketone identification were solved in the last three years using the infrared method. Eight spectra of unknown 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazones have not been identified.
