Abstract
The infrared and Raman spectra were measured for calcium bromapatite, $Ca_{5}(PO_{4}) _{3}Br$. Fundamental modes were identified, and empirical band assignments were made. Effects of solid state interaction were noted in the vibrational spectra and interpreted by factor group analysis on the basis of the space group $P6_{3}/m - C^{2} _{6h}$ with six phosphate ions on $C_{s}$ - sites in the Bravais unit ceil. The vibrational spectra were compared with those obtained for calcium chlor- and fluorapatite. Trends in splittings of bands can be interpreted for these apatites in terms of differences in the distortion of phosphate ions from ideal tetrahedral structures.
