Abstract

We present a simple model to evaluate the degree of {l} and m2 mixing in high Rydberg states that results from perturbations caused by weak, homogeneous de electric fields and static ions. This model predicts the nature and the lifetime of these states qualitatively. The theoretical predictions are discussed in the light of recent experimental observations and explain several scemingly contradictory results obtained using zero-kinetic-energy (ZEKE) pulsed field ionization (PFI) photoelectron spectroscopy.
