Abstract

The infrared absorption spectrum of BI3 has been studied from 2 to 25 microns in the solid, solution, and gas phases. One fundamental, and numerous combination, bands were observed. A corresponding study of BBr3 in the solution, pure liquid, and gas phases was made. A detailed analysis of the spectrum of BBr3. based on previously known Raman data, was carried out and all the BBr3 combination bands were assigned. The results of this analysis were applied to the BI3 spectrum. The observed spectrum of the latter is compatible with the expected planar configuration. Some techniques useful in the infrared study of these very highly reactive and hydroscopic compounds will be discussed.
