Abstract

Molecules possessing heavy atoms usually have low vibrational frequencies. Observed vibrational bands will thus have large intensity contributions from transitions originating in excited vibrational levels. Indeed, most of the intensity of the vibrational bands of such molecules is due to these ``hot'' bands. When the relevant anharmonicities are sufficiently large, the hot bands contribute strikingly to an asymmetric band shape. As examples, the contour of the Raman fundamental of bromine vapor and the totally symmetric band of liquid carbon tetrachloride will be discussed.
