“The emission spectrum of naphthalene vapour, as excited by radio-frequency oscillations of about twenty metres wavelength, consists of discrete bands superposed on a continuum. The existence of an origin (at 32017 wavenumbers) and the activity of vibrations of symmetries $ag$ and $b3g$ are consistent with the view that the lowest singlet electronic transition is allowed and long-axis polarized.”
