Abstract

Pure rotational laser emission in HF has been observed following flash photolysis of mixtures of $CF_{3}l$ $(CF_{3}Br)$ with acetylene (methyl acetylene) in a large excess of rare gas. No excited halogen emission is observed, indicating the quenching of electronic energy by acetylene in addition to the formation of a $CF_{3}$-acetylenic complex which rapidly eliminates $HF_{1}$. The transitions on which oscillation takes place in the v=0and v=1 states of HF are a function of the initial reactants (i.e., the energy distribution in the nascent product HF) and seem to occur at rotational states lower than expected from normal V$ \to R$ transfer pumping.
