Abstract

Ion cyclotron resonance techniques have been used to determine the photodissociation spectrum in the visible wavelength region for isomeric $C_{7}H_{8}^{+}$ cations. Dissociation follows the equation $$C_{7}H_{8}{^{+}} \stackrel {h\nu}{\vline width3pc height.5pt depth0pt} C_{7}H_{7}{^{+}} +H$$ for the $C_{7}H_{8}{^{+}}$ ions derived from toluene, cycloheptatriene and norbornadiene. The three ions show very different and distinctive photodissociation spectra. This new technique appears to have promise for distinguishing between different isomeric gaseous cations.
