Abstract
Digital ten-bit optical encoders have been attached directly to the grating drive screws of the infrared spectrograph at NOAA and The Ohio State University. By monitoring the rotation of the drive screw, the encoder provides an accurate measurement of the grating displacement. Wavenumbers can then be assigned to unknown spectral lines by properly comparing the encoder-measured positions of the unknown lines against appropriate infrared standards. Since the encoder output is digital, this method is well suited for computerized data processing techniques. The simplicity of the technique provides advantages in the recording and processing of large amounts of infrared data.
