Abstract

Isotopically pure $Se_{2}$ and $Te_{2}$ molecules have been examined in solid argon matrices by both absorption and laser-excited fluorescence techniques For $Se_{2}$ the B1$_{u}$ - X1$_{g}$ and $BO_{u}^{+} -XO_{g}^{+}$ transitions previously known from the gas spectra are observed red-shifted in the matrix. Two other systems involving three new electronic states (labelled as a, A, and C) of the molecule are observed. From the results on $Te_{2}$ in argon we locate the already known $XO_{g}^{+}$, $AO_{u}^{+}$, and $BO_{u}^{+}$ states but also five new states we designate as a, b, C, D, and E. Two low-lying states, a of $Se_{2}$ and b of $Te_{2}$, are puzzling because of their large $\omega_{e}$ values. This and other aspects of the spectra will be discussed.
