Abstract

We have studied the chemiluminescence arising from the reactions Sr+N2OSrO+N2 AND Mg+N2OMgO+N2. Atomic beams of Sr ground state (5s2 1S) and low-lying Sr meta stable states (5s5p 3po), (5s4d 1D) where reacted with N20 in beam-gas experiment. Spectra obtained under single collision conditions consist of broad ``continuum’’ emission commencing at about 400 NM and extending into the near IR, beyond our detector range (300-900 NM); SrO are bands are seen superimposed upon this continuum. Photon yields and absolute cross section will be presented. Prominent SrO A^{\prime} 1ΠX1Σ+ and A1Σ+X1Σ+ bands are observed under multiple collision conditions. We have also investigated Mg(3s3p  3PO)+N20+MgO+N2, but do not observe appreciable chemiluminescence. We estimate the upper limit to the chemiluminescence cross section to be 0,002 {\AA}2.
