We present some comparisons of Jansson’s constrained deconvolution procedure and the unconstrained procedure, with particular emphasis on the effective resolution resulting from each procedure. The absorption spectrum of the P(8) and P(9) manifolds of the $\nu 3$ band of $CH4$ have been recorded with the grating both two and four passed in order to compare the effects of the diffraction limit on the deconvoluted spectrum. Care was taken to record these spectra so their appearance was as similar as possible, i.e., same observed resolution, signal to noise and intensity. The two passed spectra were observed with a spectral slit width very close to the diffraction limit. We show the result of constrained deconvolution which clearly surpasses the theoretical limit of the grating.
