Abstract

We have investigated the cis $\leftrightarrow$ trans photoisomerization of HONO using a tunable IR laser to selectively irradiate individual modes of each isomer. Kinetic studies indicate the isomerization is a single photon process but is probably second order in HONO. There is considerable evidence for rapid energy transfer in the matrix. The isomerization rate depends upon the mode being excited. There is evidence that this reaction is not statistical but that rate depends upon the details of the coupling between the excited mode and the reaction coordinate.
