Abstract

$^{13}CH_{4}$ has been studied by the molecular-beam magnetic resonance method in the high-field limit. The spectrum observed corresponds to the reorientation of the carbon-13 nuclear spin with respect to the external magnetic field H. The transition frequencies have been calculated as functions of the molecular coupling constants by perturbation theory to order 1/$H^{2}$. The terms from the proton-carbon dipole-dipole interaction have been determined by the method of Yi, Ozier and $Anderson.^{1}$ It has been found that the magnitude of the carbon-13 spin-rotation constant is $(15.94 \pm 0.35)$ kHz. This work was supported in part by the National Science Foundation (U.S.A.) and the National Research Council (Canada). I. Ozier has been an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow.
