Abstract

A Perkin-Elmer Model 108 Rapid Scanning Spectrometer was used to study the kinetics of the third order reactions $2NO+X_{2}=2NOX$ (X=O, Cl, and Br). These reactions which have half lives of from one second to one hour were followed by observing the optical density change of the product NOX band in the infrared region $(1550 cm^{-1} to 1850 cm^{-1})$. Spectra were recorded with a Honeywell Model 1508 Visicorder. The use of this spectrometer for quantitative gas phase kinetics will be discussed, and sample spectra will be shown.
