Abstract

Absolute line intensities have been measured in absorption in the 1-0, 2-0, 3-0, 2-1, and 3-2 bands of HCl and the 1-0 and 2-0 bands of DC1. The spectral slit widths employed in this investigation ranged from $\sim 0.2 - 1.0 cm^{-1}$ depending upon the spectral region, allowing one to measure the intensities of lines of the individual isotopic species of $HCl^{35}$, $HCl^{37}$, $DCl^{35}$ and $DCl^{37}$. In order to allow for the influence of line width and line shape upon the measured intensities, a wide range of optical densities was employed, varying both path length and pressure at various temperatures up to $\sim 1300^\circ K$. From the individual line intensities, integrated band intensities and the squares of the vibrational matrix elements are evaluated. A comparison of experimental line intensities with a theory which takes into account the interaction of vibration and rotation yields the ratio of the permanent dipole moment to the product of effective charge by equilibrium internuclear $distance.^{1}$ From this ratio and the vibrational matrix elements, conclusions are drawn regarding the dipole moment of HCl and DCl as a function of internuclear distance.
