Abstract

Long-range forces have been discussed in connection with: (a) Rotational Predissociation (limiting curve of dissociation) (b) Vibrational spacings (Birge-Sponer extrapolation) (c) Rydberg-Klein-Rees) (RKR) potentials. It has often been assumed that the internuclear potential energy near dissociation can be adequately represented by a single $C_{o}r^{-a}$ term. This assumption is invalid, however, if any of the following are important: (i) higher multipole interactions (ii) higher-order perturbation terms (iii) exponentially-decreasing overlap terms (iv) near-degeneracies, especially those associated with changes in angular momentum coupling. Various molecules for which such considerations are of significance will be briefly discussed.
