Abstract
Ineffective communication among teams is the leading cause of medical errors in the United States. At one cancer specific Midwest academic medical center, there was no budgeted training focused on front line staff communication strategies. The purpose of this project was to evaluate TeamSTEPPS® within the Surgical and Neurological Intensive Care Unit (SNICU) focused on communication related patient safety events, staff engagement and functional vacancy. Data revealed a decrease in communication related safety events and a decrease in functional vacancy. Based on the outcomes of this project TeamSTEPPS® will continue to be promoted as a primary resource for communication training.
