The possibility of HOC1 playing en important role as a sink for chlorine atoms in the upper atmosphere leads to the need of high quality infrared data on this molecule. The O - H stretching band, $\nu 1$, at $3609cm-1$ has been investigated under high resolution and assignments made through K = 8 of both the chlorine isotopic species. Substantially improved ground and upper state constants will be reported. The A-type component has been assigned for the first time and was included in the asymmetric rotor fits of the ground and $\nu 1$ states. Preliminary estimates of the band intensity will be given.
