Abstract

The possibility of HOC1 playing en important role as a sink for chlorine atoms in the upper atmosphere leads to the need of high quality infrared data on this molecule. The O - H stretching band, $\nu_{1}$, at $3609\;cm^{-1}$ has been investigated under high resolution and assignments made through K = 8 of both the chlorine isotopic species. Substantially improved ground and upper state constants will be reported. The A-type component has been assigned for the first time and was included in the asymmetric rotor fits of the ground and $\nu_{1}$ states. Preliminary estimates of the band intensity will be given.
