Abstract

The vibration-rotation bands of $CO_{2}$ at $15 \mu$ and $9-10 \mu$ have been remeasured with a high resolution vacuum grating spectrograph. The P and R structure of $\nu_{2}$ at 15 $\mu$ has been isolated all the way up to $J = 60$. The following values have been obtained for the molecular constants of $CO_{2}: B_{00}o_{0} = 0.39016 cm^{-1}$, $B^{(d)}_{01^{1}0} = 0.39057 cm^{-1}$, and band orgin of $\nu_{2}$ is $667.40 cm^{-1}$. These are in good agreement with the values obtained by G. Herzberg and L. $Herzberg^{1}$ from measurements of photographic infrared bands. A careful investigation has been made of the variation of the centrifugal stretching constants in some of the levels of $CO_{2}$. It has not been possible to detect any change (greater than 1%) in the centrifugal stretching constants between the two states involved in $\nu_{2}$. In the levels of 02$^\circ$O and $10^\circ$O which are connected by Fermi resonance, a 14% change in the D values has been found compared to the normal state.
