Abstract

We have observed the $J = 0 \rightarrow 1$ absorption of the HNC molecule in laboratory de glow discharges in a variety of gas mixturess. Methane and nitrogen employed in a cell cooled to liquid nitrogen temperature constitute the most sataisfactory combination. The frequency of the transition in the normal species is in excellent agreement with recent astrophysical measurements. The molecular structure has been obtained by isotopic substitution. The behaviour of HNC is compared to that of HCN in the same discharge.
