Abstract
A systematic effort to understand the vibrational dynamics of carbohydrates has begun with the 1,5-anhydropentitols, which are derived from the pentoses by substitution of hydrogen for the hydroxyl group at C(1). Raman and infrared spectral data formed the basis for a normal coordinate analysis using the program developed by Schachtschneider, modified to incorporate a non-linear refinement procedure. The resulting force field has been found useful in interpretation of the spectra of other carbohydrates.
