Abstract
Emission spectra of small molecular ions have been recorded by introducing the light from a radio frequency discharge (typically used in laser probed velocity modulation experiments) into a high resolution Bruker Fourier Transform Spectrometer. Unlike the random motion of neutral species, ion motion follows the rapidly oscillating polarity of the electrodes which results in Doppler shifted frequencies for the ions. Diodes have been used which allow the ions to travel in only one direction. Two spectra recorded with the diode in opposite polarity are subtracted. Neutral transitions are not effected by the polarity and therefore cancel as a results of the subtraction; however, the Doppler shifted ion transitions do not cancel. We have also observed an interesting discrimination against neutrals by simply opening the instrumental apertures beyond the recommended settings. Preliminary results will be presented.
