Abstract

Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) allows diagonal and nondiagonal matrix elements of the magnetic dipole moment operator to be determined experimentally. MCD measurements at various temperatures down to 4K are of great aid in clarifying spectral assignments of broad bands and have no counterpart in spectroscopy. This will be demonstrated in the particular examples of the transitions 4I9/22P1/2 of Nd2+ in CaWO4 and 3H42Po in AILaO3.
