Abstract
This paper critically examines several dimensions of the existing framework for regulation and supervision of the financial system in Costa Rica and of proposals for reform, from the perspective of theoretical views about the role of the state in financial markets. It describes the transition from a scheme of repressive regulation towards a prudential framework that promotes the efficiency and stability of the financial system. It lists the components of a financial reform that began in the mid-1980s and discusses in detail the main components of legal reforms under discussion.
