Abstract
This report addresses the problem of the quantitative characterization of caviiicould potentially capture qualities of a curve traced out on a plane, such as how the curve meanders and the degree of jaggedness, are investigated. In particular, the following are described: fractal measures, angle measures, curvilinearity measures, and distances from baselines. Next, a variety of lines from 1:24,000 scale USGS maps, along with their manual generalizations and analytical simplifications, are evaluated using the described measures. The results are analyzed in the context of generalization for two reasons-(1) to study how the measures change as a line is generalized, and (2) to consider the degree to which the measures actually do characterize cartographic lines, and consequently, the extent to which the measures can potentially be used to guide the process of generalization. Patterns revealed in the results of measuring the lines are discussed.
