Abstract

The electron diffraction of gaseous hexachlorodisilane $Si_{2}Cl_{6}$ and 1,4-dichlorobutyne $ClH_{2}C-C\equiv C-CH_{2}Cl$ was studied by a sector apparatus and analysed by Karle’s method. The result is that the hindering potential barriers against the internal rotation of the former is about 1 kcal, and that of the latter is less than 1 kcal. The inner halos (q -- 5 25) are found to give a conclusive evidence for the internal rotation. The previously published $method^{1}$ of calculation of the mean amplitudes of thermal vibration is extended to the molecules having slightly hindered rotation. For the computation of the mean amplitudes, the unmodified radial distribution curve proved to be better than the usual modified one.
