Abstract

The rotational absorption spectrum of maleic anhydride has been assigned independently in two laboratories. The rotational constants for the ground vibrational state are $A = 6842.56 \pm .06 Mc./sec., B = 2467.72 \pm .20$, and $C = 1813.64 \pm .03$. Study of the spectra of two higher vibrational states is in progress. The permanent dipole moment, $\mu_{\rm B}$, was found to be $3.95 \pm .04\,D$ from measurements of the Stark effect on the $1_{0,1}-2_{1, 2}$ and $1_{1,0}-2_{2, 1}$ transitions. This work was supported in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.
