Abstract

It is frequently observed that the spectral intensity distributions of the one-phonon spectra in the low temperature absorption and fluorescence spectra of an impurity in a host crystal are significantly different. A theoretical model for interpreting such a breakdown of mirror symmetry is presented. Out of the treatment a criterion emerges for determining when the quadratic coupling contribution to the zerophonon bandwidth, for a given linear coupling strength, is expected to be minimal. New expressions for the temperature dependence of the zero-phonon band position and width are presented and discussed in terms of available experimental data.
