Abstract

Trace concentrations of HOCl have recently been detected in the $stratosphere^{1}$. In order to improve the spectral data set available for this molecule, we have recorded the a-, b-type hybrid $v_{1}$ band of HOCl at $3609 cm^{-1}$ with a resolution of $0.004 cm^{-1}$, and the spectra of both the $^{35}cl$ and $^{37}cl$ isotopic species have been completely assigned. The spectra were produced by allowing a mixture of $Cl_{2}O$ and $H_{2}O$ to equilibrate in a multipass cell and were calibrated against recent water vapor measurements of $Toth_{2}$. The absolute wave number accuracy appears to be better than $\pm$$0.001 cm^{-1}$. Ground state combination differences obtained have been combined with the extensive microwave data of Gillis Singbeil $et al.^{3}$, and fit with a Watson Hamiltonian in the S reduction to obtain a significantly improved set of ground state centrifugal distortion constants through $p_{8}$ terms. Upper state rotational constants have also been obtained. The standard deviation of the fittings is better than $\pm$$0.0004 cm^{-1}$. For the $^{35}Cl$ isotopic species, a number of $K=2$ levels in the vicinity of $J=25$ have been found to be shifted by a weak resonance.
