Abstract

In the infrared spectrum of solid cyanogen, all six of the pseudo-translational lattice modes permitted by symmetry are observed. Seven distinct Raman bands are observed, compared with the eight symmetry-allowed pseudo-rotational lattice modes. The observed frequencies are in good agreement with those calculated from a crystal potential consisting of atom-atom interactions, but in poorer agreement with those calculated from a potential of the type suggested by Walmsley and Pople (Mol. Phys. 8, 345 (1964). Calculated intensities of the infrared and Raman active lattice modes agree reasonably well with the observed values.
