Abstract

The 3460 - 3015 {\AA} band system of $I_{2}$ has been tentatively $assigned^{1}$ to the $^{3}\Pi$$_{2g}$ $\rightarrow$ $^{3}\Pi_{2u}$ transition of $I_{2}$. In the course of investigating this system as a candidate for an e-beam initiated laser the collision deactivation rates of the 3427 {\AA} vibrational band by argon and krypton were measured. In addition, the collisional deactivation rate of the 3427 {\AA} vibrational band by ground state $I_{2}$ was measured and an estimate of the Lifetime of the upper state of the 3427 {\AA} transition was obtained.
