Abstract

The infrared and Raman spectra of $NaH_{3}(SeO_{3})_{2}$ and $LiH_{3}(SeO_{3})_{2}$ were recorded from $24^{\circ} K$ to $300^{\circ} K$. The interpretation of the spectra for the first ferroelectric phase of $NaH_{3}(SeO_{3})_{2}$ is based upon $SeO_{3}^{=}$, $HSeO_{3}^{-}$ and $H_{2}SeO_{3}$ units, the remaining proton is disordered. The second ferroelectric phase of $NaH_{3}(SeO_{3})_{2}$ results from an ordering of the remaining proton, producing $HSeO_{3}^{-}$ and $H_{2}SeO_{3}$ units. In contrast, $LiH_{3}(SeO_{3})_{2}$ spectra indicate $SeO_{3}$ and $HSeO_{3}$ groups only, the remaining proton is disordered over the temperature range studied. An interpretation of the hydrogen bonded stretching region for both crystals is given, based upon the proton diffusion barriers.
