Abstract
A theoretical study has been made of the interaction of excited electronic states of a monolayer film of organic dyes with surface plasmon modes of a metal substrate. The focus is on observable effects of this interaction on reflection spectra of the system. Two effects are clear from the spectra. First, for a weakly absorbing dye film, a plasmon induced amplification of the dye attenuated total reflectance (ATR) spectrum is seen, demonstrating the use of the surface plasmon as a novel optical probe. Secondly, the spectra show split resonances due to the interaction of the excited states of the film with the surface plasma resonance.
