Abstract

The two-photon excitation spectrum (TPE) of trans-stilbene In liquid solution is presented in the total energy region $31 000-47 000 cm^{-1}$ using a laser pumped organic dye laser as the excitation source. A previously hidden electronic state is uncovered at $\sim 41 000$ $cm^{-1}$. An assignment of this state is made on the basis of the ratio of the spectrum taken with a circularly polarized source to that taken with a linearly polarized source.
