Abstract

A number of monosubstituted ethanols of the type $CH_{2}XCH_{2}OH$ have been reported as possessing an intramolecular hydrogen bond and thus providing the gauche form with extra stability. The microwave spectrum of the gauche form of 2-chloroethanol has been analyzed. The quadrupole coupling constants have been determined in the ground and two excited torsional states, and a structure which approximates the observed rotational constants has been determined. The results will be disucssed in terms of the proposed hydrogen bond.
