Abstract
Using a 2-meter vacuum spectrograph and an ordinary transformer discharge with a small amount of $N_{2}$ and several mm of argon or xenon, new bands of $N_{2}$ were observed in the region between 1600--2250 A in each case. All bands are shaded to the long wavelength side, and the bands in the $(N_{2}+A)$ mixture have a single branch while the bands in the $(N_{2}+Xe)$ mixture show two heads. A preliminary vibrational analysis of these bands has been performed, and the hands in the $(N_{2}+A)$ mixture are attributed to $a^{1} {}^{1}\Sigma_{a} - X ^{1}\Sigma^{+}_{g} (\nu_{\infty} = 67735.5 cm^{-1})$, while the bands in the $(N_{2}+Xe)$ mixture are attributed to $^{3}\Sigma_{a} (or 3^\Delta_{u}) - X ^{1}\Sigma_{g} (\nu_{\infty} = 65850.4 cm^{-1})$. The present results are compared with Wilkinson and Mulliken’s $results^{1}$ in absorption.
