Abstract
The frequency and integrated absorbancy of the carbonyl stretching vibrations of acetic, benzoic, $1-$ and 2-naphthalene carboxylic, 2- and 3-thiophene carboxylic, 2-pyrrole carboxylic, and 2-furoic acids were measured in $CCl_{4}, BrCCl_{3}, HCCl_{2}, HCBr_{3}, H_{2}CBr_{2}$; tetra, penta, 1,2-di, 1, 1-di, and 1, 1, 1-tri chloroethanes; 2-chloro-s-methylpropane, 2-chlorobutane, 1-chloro butane and decane; tetra and trichloroethylene; octane, cyclohexane, cyclohexene, $CS_{2}$, and acetonitrile. Frequency shifts and intensity changes of these acids were compared to those observed with the same solvents and aliphatic and aromatic ketones, esters, and amides. Dimer bands were not observed with any carboxylic acid in acetonitrile. Solvent influence upon absorbancy was considerably more complex than upon frequency, which followed the regular pattern described by previous investigators.
