Abstract

The alkali metal nitrates, thallium nitrate and anhydrous copper II nitrate volatilize smoothly near their respective melting points. Vibrational spectra of the matrix isolated vapor species indicate that the monomeric ($MNO_{3}$ and $Cu(NO_{2})_{3})$ species is the dominant component although dimers ($MNO_{3})_{2}$ also occur over the alkali metal nitrates. The monomer spectra are informative as to the effect of strong cation association on the nitrate structure and force constants.
