Abstract

Polarized infrared spectra of single crystals of naphthalene and of p-dichlorobenzene have been obtained. Factor group splitting of vibrational transitions has been observed, and the polarization dependence of transition intensities has allowed conclusions to be drawn concerning vibrational assignments. Some modifications of assignments are suggested. Calculations have been made of the splittings of various transitions, based on an exciton model with various postulated intermolecular force fields. Comparisons between calculated and observed splittings will be discussed as factors in confirming assignments and in the understanding of the intermolecular forces.
