Abstract
Composition of NO with the superheated vapors of chalcogens from Knudsen cells yields $S_{2}NO$ (1771.7 and $670 cm^{-1}$) and $Se_{2}NO (1771.1 cm^{-1}$). The chalcogen-chalcogen stretching frequencies are surprisingly close, and are less than $5 cm^{-1}$ to the low-energy side of the $(NO)_{2}$ band. Convincing proof that the new bands belong to a new molecule (and not to a perturbed $(NO)_{2}$ species) is provided by scrambled N-14/N-15 end O-16/O-18 experiments. Products of photolysis include the better known oxides $S_{2}O SeO,$ and $Se_{2}O$.
