Abstract

Composition of NO with the superheated vapors of chalcogens from Knudsen cells yields S2NO (1771.7 and 670cm−1) and Se2NO(1771.1cm−1). The chalcogen-chalcogen stretching frequencies are surprisingly close, and are less than 5cm−1 to the low-energy side of the (NO)2 band. Convincing proof that the new bands belong to a new molecule (and not to a perturbed (NO)2 species) is provided by scrambled N-14/N-15 end O-16/O-18 experiments. Products of photolysis include the better known oxides S2OSeO, and Se2O.
