Abstract
In this talk, Professor Barshay will speak about the approximately 600,000 Japanese
captured during the Soviet invasion of Manchuria and Korea in August of 1945. The
Soviets made efforts to indoctrinate them in the following years. While some
Japanese resisted, others cooperated and became a strong radicalizing influence in
postwar Japanese society after their repatriation, as can be seen in the labor
movement. Professor Barshay will draw conclusions about the influence of this
collective memory in Japan on Japan-USSR state to state relations.
