Abstract

Attentuated total reflection measurements offer a convenient way to determine the optical constants of liquids in the infrared region---giving both refractive-index and absorption-coefficient values as functions of frequency. The method we have developed involves measurement of reflectances throughout a band for two values of the angle of incidence, the two angles being chosen appropriately for each region of the band. Unpolarized light is used; an instrumental sensitivity factor must be determined once for all. The computer program we use then calculates the refractive index and absorption coefficient for each frequency, with their propagated errors. Results are given, and compared, with previous workers results, for the $770 cm^{-1}$ band of $CCl_{4}$, the $760 cm^{-1}$ band of $CHCl_{2}$, and the $670 cm^{-1}$ and $1035 cm^{-1}$ bands of $C_{6}H_{6}$; the integrated intensities, reduced with the usual assumptions to darks (cm/millimole), are respectively 46.6, 28.6, 17.0, and 1.41.
