Abstract

Dean Ramsey was born in Columbus but grew up in Pataskala, Ohio. When Ramsey started school at The Ohio State University in the late 1940s, he wanted to be an aeronautical engineer. A chance meeting with Professor Charles Sutton from the Department of Landscape Architecture convinced Ramsey to join that program. In 1960, Ramsey came to the Ohio State University's Architect's Office as a landscape architect. At one point, he was appointed Director of Major Construction and worked on projects like the veterinary hospital and the reconstruction of University Hall. Eventually, Ramsey became director of Physical Plant. In the mid-1980s, his department was in charge of converting Ohio State's heating system from coal to gas. In 1988, Ramsey retired. Ramsey said he believes his greatest accomplishment at OSU was to help improve the quality of the campus during a 30-year era of great change after World War II
